Engelage and his Windsor Spitfires make history!
Our feature goalie for the month of June is

Andrew Engelage

Andrew has always had a passion for hockey, but the road for
him was not an easy one. “I started out playing my first
season behind Anthony Guadagnolo and think I lost 20 or so
games but it was a good learning experience”. It took some perseverance, but he
managed to battle through a 12-24 start in his debut season
at the Major Junior Level. With hard work he was able to put together a 20-10
second season and 46 wins in 08/09.
Andrew led his team through the OHL playoffs, sweeping

Although there are may facilities to choose from, we were able to book Crowchild Twin Arenas for our Summer Goaltending School August 9th-13th, 2010.

Crowchild Arena is an excellent facility located in North West Calgary.
Calgary and area has been a great area for development of top Goaltenders over the years and we are excited to be in Calgary this summer!
Our school is for age 8-18 and students are separated into 3 groups based on age and skill level. As usual, there are a maximum of 16 participants per level, so this school will likely sell out.

Give your body the fuel it needs to stay healthy and compete!
One largely neglected area of Goaltending is proper nutrition. Let's face it, goalies often work harder then any player on the ice, carry the weight of soaking wet gear and are under more psychological stress than any player in the game of hockey.
Goalies not only require energy and lasting fuel to perform, they need to replace basic nutrition with optimal nutrition in order to stay sharp, healthy and assist with injury prevention. Goalies today drain themselves physically very quickly. It becomes very important to have fuel in your tank prior to the intense physical exercise that is required. This would include having a very good meal 1 hour or more prior to games/practices and a good refuelling meal within 20-45 minutes after. These meals should include a good balance of carbs and protein. Now we know what your thinking...... "where are we suppose to get a good meal 30 minutes after a game when the only options are the concession food, or fast food?".
Well, here are some suggestions. Firstly, bring an extra bottle of water with you to games and practices as hydration is key. Have a sports drink available for during and after games and practices to replace electrolytes. Pack a good quality protein shake, or meal replacement bar with you for immediate consumption after sessions. Many of these bars or shakes contain essential nutrients that would otherwise only be available in a well balanced meal.
Shakes and bars are not meant to replace a balanced diet, but they are a great alternative to the fast food or poor quality fatty foods that we see many goalies jump all over while at tournaments, games or practices. It just takes some good planning and some time spent learning what products are available that can help.

Fuel your body better and watch it respond when called upon to do the extraordinary that is goaltending!

Our feature goalie for the month of March is AJHL All Star goaltender Aaron Dell. In only his second year with the Calgary Canucks of the AJHL, Aaron has put up some nice numbers, backstopping the Canucks to 25 wins in the regular season. Aaron has also committed to the University of North Dakota (UND), where he will continue his impressive career with the Fighting Sioux. (Div 1 NCAA).

Aaron Dell
Aaron will follow in the footsteps of former NHL goalies Ed Belfour and Jon Casey, who were both former stars for the Fighting Sioux during their College careers. Aaron has showed some excellent resiliency rebounding from a 5 -11- 2 record in 07/08. The 19 year old Airdrie, AB native possesses an excellent work ethic and uses his size and outstanding agility to shut down the opposition.
Aaron was a pleasure to work with as a student and we wish him well with his college career!
