Welcome

Accel Goaltending School is an Elite Hockey Goaltending Program that teaches the fundamentals of todays goaltending to young goalies ranging in age from 8-18yrs old.

Accel Goaltending School students are separated into 3 levels for both on ice and off ice activities. These levels are determined by both age, and skill level. Generally an Accel student can progress through to level 3 from beginner status in approximately 4-6 years.

There are many activities that Accel Goalies will participate throughout the course of a week with us. Our group of experienced instructors will mentor students through these activities, which include; on ice training and development specific for each level, Goaltender specific off ice training, games and challenges, classroom sessions covering all the key areas of development. Specialized Accel Video Training sessions are also included in all programs. Individual professional video analysis is included with the Level 3 program.

We are proud of our program and take a lot of care in mentoring our students to ensure that they are having fun, being challenged and learning and developing the skills they need to compete at the level they wish to pursue.

Parents available for the week of our schools are welcome to attend classroom sessions, and parent meetings are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Engelage and his Windsor Spitfires make history!

Our feature goalie for the month of June is Andrew Engelage of the 2009 Memorial Cup Champion Windsor Spitfires..

Andrew Engelage

Engelage, of Oshawa, Ontario, posted a massive 46 win regular season this year and continued his impressive play, taking his team all the way to the top of Junior hockey supremacy by winning the 2009 Memorial Cup Championship.

Andrew has always had a passion for hockey, but the road for him was not an easy one. “I started out playing my first season behind Anthony Guadagnolo and think I lost 20 or so games but it was a good learning experience”. It took some perseverance, but he managed to battle through a 12-24 start in his debut season at the Major Junior Level. With hard work he was able to put together a 20-10 second season and 46 wins in 08/09.

Andrew led his team through the OHL playoffs, sweeping Owen Sounds in 4 strait, disposing of Plymouth in 6, eliminating London in 5 and winning the OHL Championship in 5 games versus the Brampton Battalion. Plymouth was a really tough series, they took two games from us, London was a tough series as well, they had a pretty high powered offence and could almost score at will. I just had to go out there and try to make the big saves when the team needed one” Andrew compiled an impressive 14-2 record with a .908 save percentage leading his team to it’s first Memorial Cup appearance since 1988.

The Canadian Hockey Championship Tournament didn’t start out the way that Andrew envisioned, as the Spitfires dropped it's first two contests. They battled back from an 0-2 opening record to become the first team to win the Memorial Cup in that fashion. A fitting testimony to Andrews junior hockey career that is chalked full of great stories of never giving up. “I have really worked on playing well under pressure over the past couple seasons".

This is a memory that will stay with Andrew throughout his career, no matter where he goes in hockey. Andrew has yet to decide what path he will take. “I will just take a week or so and enjoy this, then I will look at my options. Maybe play pro or
go to school and play CIS College Hockey".

Andrew is a big goalie at 6’5” 206 and uses his size to his advantage, making it look easy between the pipes.

Congratulations Andrew, we wish you well as your hockey career continues!

Vaughn joins Accel Goaltending!!

Accel Goaltending is excited to announce
that Vaughn Hockey will participate as a sponsor for our Goaltending Schools & Clinics.

What does this mean for you? Well, there are a number of things that Vaughn will be doing in conjunction with our Elite Programs, including providing information on the latest in gear technology, as well as offering some exclusive programs that include contests and great prizes. Students will be able to see our instructors wearing the latest Vaughn gear and have a chance to learn all about what is coming in 2010 and beyond at our equipment demonstration and classroom sessions.

There are a lot of equipment suppliers out there, so why Vaughn? Well, Vaughn has been a leader in Goaltending Equipment over the years and we can stand behind the quality of the products they produce. Many of our instructors have been with Vaughn since they began as goalies.

"Vaughn has been my first choice in pads, gloves, blockers, chest protectors and pants since I began as a goalie" says Accel lead instructor Dan MacDonald. "I feel confident recommending Vaughn gear to students at all ages and levels and have used Vaughn products myself since 1987".

We are looking forward to developing a great long term relationship with Vaughn Hockey. Stay tuned for more updates!

Accel Goaltending Calgary to be held at Crowchild Arena

Although there are may facilities to choose from, we were able to book Crowchild Twin Arenas for our Summer Goaltending School August 9th-13th, 2010.

Crowchild Arena is an excellent facility located in North West Calgary.

Calgary and area has been a great area  for development of top Goaltenders over the years and we are excited to be in Calgary this summer!

Our school is for age 8-18 and students are separated into 3 groups based on age and skill level. As usual, there are a maximum of 16 participants per level, so this school will likely sell out.

Give your body the fuel it needs to stay healthy and compete!

One largely neglected area of Goaltending is proper nutrition. Let's face it, goalies often work harder then any player on the ice, carry the weight of soaking wet gear and are under more psychological stress than any player in the game of hockey.

Goalies not only require energy and lasting fuel to perform, they need to replace basic nutrition with optimal nutrition in order to stay sharp, healthy and assist with injury prevention. Goalies today drain themselves physically very quickly. It becomes very important to have fuel in your tank prior to the intense physical exercise that is required. This would include having a  very good meal 1 hour or more prior to games/practices and a good refuelling meal within 20-45 minutes after. These meals should include a good balance of carbs and protein. Now we know what your thinking...... "where are we suppose to get a good meal 30 minutes after a game when the only options are the concession food, or fast food?".

Well, here are some suggestions. Firstly, bring an extra bottle of water with you to games and practices as hydration is key. Have a sports drink available for during and after games and practices to replace electrolytes. Pack a good quality protein shake, or meal replacement bar with you for immediate consumption after sessions. Many of these bars or shakes contain essential nutrients that would otherwise only be available in a well balanced meal.

Shakes and bars are not meant to replace a balanced diet, but they are a great alternative to the fast food or poor quality fatty foods that we see many goalies jump all over while at  tournaments, games or practices. It just takes some good planning and some time spent learning what products are available that can help.

Fuel your body better and watch it  respond when called upon to do the extraordinary that is goaltending!

Feature Goalie for March 2009

Our feature goalie for the month of March is AJHL All Star goaltender Aaron Dell. In only his second year with the Calgary Canucks of the AJHL, Aaron has put up some nice numbers, backstopping the Canucks to 25 wins in the regular season. Aaron has also committed to the University of North Dakota (UND), where he will continue his impressive career with the Fighting Sioux. (Div 1 NCAA).

Aaron Dell

Aaron will follow in the footsteps of former NHL goalies Ed Belfour and Jon Casey, who were both former stars for the Fighting Sioux during their College careers. Aaron has showed some excellent resiliency rebounding from a 5 -11- 2 record in 07/08. The 19 year old Airdrie, AB native possesses an excellent work ethic and uses his size and outstanding agility to shut down the opposition.

Aaron was a pleasure to work with as a student and we wish him well with his college career!
